A case for Children’s rights

It was sad reading a story of parents smuggling children into South Africa from Zimbabwe without proper procedures and the children had to be deported

Today the 10th of December, we celebrate the Human Rights day to commemorate the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. It is a day we remember the importance of equality, mutual respect and mutual respect.

It’s a time to reflect, is there anything to celebrate or the same reasons for the commemorations are still prevalent in our society more than 70 years after suchdeclaration?

This is a reminder that Children’s rights are human rights and that they should beprioritized.

The challenge is that human rights have been infringed by those who should uphold Governments’ failure to prioritize children’s rights makes child mortality and malnutrition,risky child migration, forced labour widespread in Africa.

Children’s rights are a collective responsibility. Parents, guardians, and the society at large need to safeguard the well-being of children.

Under budgeting and poverty continue to keep millions out of school. It is a time to reflect and take action so that we commemorate human rights day with a purpose.

Religion continues to be used to infringe up the rights and freedom of young people. The prevalence of child marriages, forced circumcision, statutory rape and childmolestation continue to be a drawback in the fight for an equal society withchildren in it.

Economic exploitation driven by poverty has led to the continuous use of child labour.

This article is not a complaint per say, but a call to action to our leaders to everyone. Let’s clamour for justice in society. Inequality is structural and there is need for structural changes in the state and society to redress the Inequalities thatdominate the societies we live in. children are vulnerable they need to beprotected not exposed to danger.

Governments should alleviate health services to children. Policies should be put in place to mainstream the plight of young children in Africa.
